With the pair of 1-2 sweeps, both Speed and Foust put the competition out of championship reach, guaranteeing that a Volkswagen driver will win the 2015 Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship.
The California native suffered a tire puncture in his first Heat that sent him to the back of the Semifinal field, but the No. 41 driver battled back to start the Final from third on the grid.
“I cannot thank the VARX crew enough for the hard work and long hours they put in to get this Beetle GRC back on the podium today. This is another great result for the whole team and I’m excited that we’re heading into the Vegas finale with a lock on the championship for Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross.” – Speed
After becoming the all-time Red Bull GRC wins leader during the Los Angeles weekend, Speed came to the checkered flag in the second position.
The three-time X Games gold medalist is now the championship points leader after his sixth podium of the 2015 season.
“Fortunately we were able to get back to the line after that incident with (Patrik) Sandell. I think we now realize that our cars are durable and we’re having no mechanical or liability problems and that’s key in Global Rallycross. It’s definitely a contact sport; everyone at Volkswagen Andretti has done an amazing job at developing these cars and making them as strong as possible. This race was huge for points, so we just need to have a strong day tomorrow and stay out of trouble.” – Speed
The All-American racer finished race one in Los Angeles in the first position, ultimately bumping him into the third spot in the championship points hunt.
The former Formula 1 driver set the fastest lap in the No. 41 Merchant First Beetle during this weekend’s doubleheader event at the Port of Los Angeles.
“It’s a tough track, it’s super technical honestly, but it’s definitely my favorite so far this season. The crossover jump is a huge addition to Global Rallycross that we all love; so I’m happy to see it make a comeback. There was a lot of strategy that played out in today’s race, obviously that final turned out exactly how we wanted. It feels incredible to walk away with a win and more importantly some solid championship points. Fingers crossed that we can end tomorrow’s race the same way.” – Speed
The three-time X Games Gold Medalist finished round seven of the Red Bull Global Rallycross in the seventh position.
After an announcement made earlier this week, the five-time Global Rallycross race winner will continue to pilot the No. 41 Volkswagen GRC Beetle throughout the next two seasons.
“We put in some good, consistent laps during yesterday’s practice sessions and heat, but today just wasn’t in our favor. Bad luck built on top of bad luck, but a lot of the issues today stemmed from things we couldn’t control. On a positive note, I loved having a ton of Volkswagen guests here this weekend, just wish I would have been able to put it on the podium for them. We definitely have more speed then what was shown this weekend, so I can’t wait to unleash it in L.A.” – Speed
Speed captured his second podium finish during round six of the Red Bull Global Rallycross doubleheader weekend in Detroit.
The California-native now sits in the fifth position in the Championship point standings.
“The first start of the day, I wish they had let that go because I think we would have had the shot to steal a win, but we re-racked them and went again. Patrick (Sandell) had us a little bit all weekend really, so he deserved to win and it was good for us to finish second. Coming away with another podium is great for our championship points, now we’ll be looking on to the DC race and hopefully a win.” – Speed
